Floated Flooring Installation
This type of fitting system has both good and bad sides. MM Parquet & Carpentry Ltd would not be a fan of this fitting, but it is the cheapest and fastest type of fitting system out there.
Floating floors have been around for several years and were mainly used for laminate flooring and engineered flooring before it was called engineered it was known as semi-solid flooring. The only reason this type of fitting system should be used is if you have a large area you need done fast and cheap this is the one to use.
Some of the problems we have witnessed over the years with this style of fitting is noise. Regardless of what type of soundproof underlay you use, from expensive underlay to the cheapest, it will always make noise when it is walked on in stilettos or in hard soled shoes.
You must make sure your sub-floors within reason are level so that when you lay your floors you do not get a spring in the flooring. When floated flooring is glued together, they will take their own level. If they are just sitting on foam this will cause some spring up and down. If this happens your flooring will eventually chip and maybe break from the movement over time.
The final issue with this style of fitting is leaks or burst pipes. If something like this happens on a floated floor a lot of damage will happen to your property and usually by the time you have noticed something is wrong, it is too late, and damage is done.
The reason for this is for example if your dishwasher, fridge or washing machine leak, water will always find its way to the bottom of any floor, which is usually under your foam underlay and where your damp proof membrane is. When this happens, you will not see it and depending on how much water is coming out will determine when you will get to see it. Usually a client will first notice water damage on skirting or door frames and walls.
This usually means the water damage is widespread and flooring will need to be replaced whereas with solid wood flooring they would only need some sanding and polishing.
