Sanding, Polishing & Maintenance of Parquet Flooring
MM Parquet Flooring has extensive experience when it comes to sanding, polishing and the maintenance of parquet and plank flooring and when it comes to colours and floor finishes, we’ve got you covered. Below are some questions we have been asked over the years about parquet flooring…
1. What is the best way to clean parquet flooring?
2. How do I go about cleaning parquet flooring?
3. Can I clean parquet flooring with water?
4. Is it ok to sweep and hoover parquet flooring?
5. Do stiletto heels mark parquet flooring?
These are the types of the issues we hear about from our clients, and we’ve put together this information for you to follow when sanding or polishing your old or new parquet flooring. Most solid or engineered parquet flooring can be restored to their original and even look even better than before, no matter how badly damaged they are.
When the parquet floor is sanded right back to the raw timber, usually the next process is to get the client to choose from a range of colour and tones. It is important to discuss the type of lacquer or oil finishes you are going to apply when polishing any parquet flooring. The right percentage of sheen is also very important.
Most of the time the density of the parquet flooring will determine the amounts of coats to be given and this is one of our methods here at MM Parquet and we apply a minimum 4-5 coats on softer parquet flooring like red deals, white deals, pitch pine, walnut and even some merbau parquet flooring timbers.
When it comes to denser parquet flooring like oak , ash, mahogany, teak, or any iron wood parquet flooring you only need 3-4 coats, all these factors are adjusted when it comes to traffic and how much an area is being used for your parquet flooring.
Parquet Flooring Maintenance
When it comes to maintenance of your parquet flooring, all you can do is advise your clients on the best way of proceeding. If the correct maintenance methods are not followed from the very first stages after sanding, the polishing of your parquet flooring will slowly deteriorate over time and scuff marks will appear along with scratches and scrapes. So, the whole idea of maintaining your parquet flooring is to use your maintenance polish once or twice every 2-3 weeks. MM Parquet only recommend Bona products for maintaining your parquet flooring, which you can purchase directly from bona.ie. All their flooring maintenance products are very easy to apply and are odourless along with quick drying application, we highly recommend these products for any type of flooring or parquet flooring.
Once this is done you are now protecting the original polish that was put on your parquet flooring and you will get many more years out of your parquet flooring . Under no circumstance should your parquet flooring be washed regularly with large mops and buckets of water. This is the worst thing that could happen to your parquet flooring. When this happens, the water builds up in all the joints, it will cause the polish on your parquet flooring to break down and eventually you will get grey patches appearing in high traffic areas of all parquet flooring and any plank flooring. If something spills or falls on the floors clean with a damp mop or cloth, but your parquet flooring should always be cleaned straight after with some type of floor maintenance product from bona.ie and then hoovering or sweeping of your parquet flooring is all you need to do to keep it looking good.
We recommend a ‘no stiletto heels’ policy, to prevent the possibility of your floor sanding to be required at a sooner time than necessary. If these steps are followed you should rarely need your parquet flooring sanded, you would only need a sanding service done every 10 years. These procedures are very simple to follow and if they are carried out correctly you can have a great looking parquet floor for many years.
