There are a few issues to consider when it comes to bonding a parquet floor to a concrete subfloor. Like all surveys for parquet flooring the first thing is to check the moisture in the concrete. There is a small rule of thumb that I have used for many years for the natural drying of a concrete floor and that is one month for every inch of concrete. So, if your builder uses four inch of concrete subfloor it will take 4 months to totally dry and be able to directly bond the parquet floor. Some builders have used up to six inches of concrete depending on the building regulation, either way no matter what depth this rule applies and if you stick to it, you will never have any issues with gluing parquet flooring to your concrete base.

Once you have established that all areas have a satisfactory moisture content, the next step is to check the levels for any variants in the levels like the humps and bumps.

You need a smooth and level area to bond your parquet floor, if you have humps in your concrete subfloor you will need to use a concrete grinder.

These machines are specially designed to reduce concrete areas down by up to 10 mm and when you apply this method, the areas that have the dips you can apply your normal levelling compound.

It’s always wise to use a good quality brand of levelling compound as when you bond your parquet flooring to the area you have levelled you really need a good base. The best products for this would be supplied by laydex.ie. MM Parquet has been using many of Laydex products and they have really stood the test of time as we have been using their products for over 25 years.

Parquet Flooring - Concrete Subfloor

Once you have applied the levelling compounds to the areas you want to build up, you can use a straight edge technique to level out floors and remove any excess levelling compound. This process, once done correctly, will work well when it comes to fitting your parquet flooring and once you have bonded the parquet flooring you will get a good feeling under foot as it will have a solid feel.

The main item you must think of next when you have finished all work on your concrete subfloors is to pick out the right type of parquet flooring. There are many different products to choose from when it comes to selecting the right parquet flooring that suits your needs.
