At MM Parquet & Carpentry , many customers have asked us the question if parquet flooring can be refinished. Depending On the type of parquet flooring, whether it’s solid or engineered will determine how many times it can be finished
The ability to refinish parquet flooring largely depends on the type of parquet you have , whether it’s solid or engineered.
Here at MM Parquet flooring we can do solid parquet flooring which is made from solid wood pieces that are typically 16 – 20mm thick.
Solid parquet can be sanded and refinished multiple times, generally allowing for anywhere from 5 to 7 refinishing jobs throughout its lifespan. The thickness of the wood gives enough material to work with when sanding, this can range from 5-12mm ware top before you get to the tongue and groove of the block
The Process
The refinishing process typically involves sanding the surface to remove old finishes, repairing any damage, and applying new stain and finish. Some time depending on the condition of the parquet flooring you are working with will also determine the amount of passes you will have to do with your drum sanding machine
Engineered Parquet Flooring
Engineered parquet consists of multiple layers, with a hardwood veneer top layer over a core made of plywood or high-density fiberboard. Also these styles of parquet flooring can range from 6mm -2 mm in the ware . At these depths of ware it will limit the amount of time you can pass with the drum sanding machine
But the number of times it can be done is limited—usually 2 to 4 times. This limitation is because the top layer is generally thinner than solid flooring, and excessive sanding can lead to damaging the core layers beneath.
Similar to solid parquet, the refinishing of engineered flooring involves sanding down the surface and applying a new finish, but care must be taken to avoid sanding too deeply.
Considerations for Refinishing
Before refinishing, it’s important to assess the condition of the flooring. If there are deep scratches, gouges, or water damage, it may affect the ability to refinish. Interlocking or tongue-and-groove profiles may require specialized equipment for refinishing.
It may be beneficial to consult with MM Parquet to evaluate the flooring and perform the refinishing, especially for engineered products.
MM parquet and carpentry, when it comes to finishing parquet flooring we use two types of floor finishing products water-based and oil-based
When it comes to finishing parquet flooring. Each has its own unique characteristics and advantages, here are some of the good point on what we have for our clients
Water-Based Finishes
1. Water-based finishes typically dry faster, allowing for quicker re-coating and faster project completion.
2. These finishes emit less odor, making them more suitable for indoor applications and occupied spaces.
3. Since they are water-soluble, spills can be easily cleaned up with soap and water.
4. Water-based finishes are generally more environmentally friendly, with lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
5. Modern water-based finishes can be very durable, resisting scuffs and scratches effectively.
Oil-Based Finishes
1. Oil-based finishes tend to enhance the natural beauty and warmth of wood, providing a richer color and depth.
2. These finishes are often more durable and resistant to wear, making them suitable for high-traffic areas.
3. While this can be seen as a disadvantage, the longer drying time allows for a deeper penetration into the wood, potentially leading to a more resilient finish.
4.Oil-based finishes may require more maintenance over time, as they can be amber or yellow as they age.
5. They typically have a stronger smell, which can be a consideration for indoor use.
Choosing the Right Finish
The choice between water-based and oil-based finishes depends on your specific needs and priorities, such as appearance, durability, application environment, and maintenance preferences. In summary, solid parquet flooring offers more flexibility and longevity in refinishing compared to engineered parquet. Customers at MM Parquet & Carpentry should consider the type of parquet flooring they have, evaluate its condition, and consult with professionals to make the most informed decision regarding refinishing options.
At MM Parquet and Carpentry, we can help you assess these factors and choose the best finishing product for your parquet flooring needs.
